Mountain High, Valley Low

September 12, 2013

We countdown to Cornucopia (Nov.7-17) with the best fall activities in
and around the Fairmont Chateau Whistler.

Picking herbs from the rooftop garden and apiary for a salsa verde-style
rub for tonights dinner. I opted for Rosemary, Lemon Balm, Summer
Savoury and Corianderdelicious on that nights fillet mignon in the
hotels Grill Room. http://www.fairmont.com/whistler/dining/grillroom

Our host, Kerry Duff, pours Egyptian lemonade, with mint and strawberry
– yum.

Executive Sous Chef Richard Samaniego shows off candy cane beets which
will be front and centre on menus for the newly extended Cornucopia
food and wine festival
(Nov. 7-17). And watch for wildflower honey
ice cream once they start harvesting from the new beehives. Now thats
buzz-worthy.

An invitation to ride the Peak
2 PEAK gondola
connecting Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, the
longest freestanding gondola in the world, had us on top of the worldand
it was a birthday present, too. Hey, you only turn 28 once! www.whistlerblackcomb.com

A golf lesson at the Chateau
Whistler Golf Course Golf Academy
had our swing totally transformed
(with video to prove it). The ride out to the centre with scenery like
this (8th hole) plus a view all the way down to the Garibaldi mountain
range was equally inspiring. http://fairmontgolf.com/whistler

In need of a culture hit after so much adventure, we headed to the Squamish
LilWat Cultural Centre
across the street from the Chateau Whistler
for a fantastic tour by our young first nations guide, Cougar. Making
cedar bark bracelets in the long house was a fun souvenir. www.slcc.ca

Theres a bear in the kitchen! Thankfully just the dipped-strawberry
kind, as demonstrated by the Chateaus tres charmant French Pastry chef ,
Laurent Bernard. This one was crafted by an 8-year-old chef-in-training.
We think she has a future, non?
