As the Calgary Home + Design Showgears up to open this week (Sept. 19-22, 2013), we had the chance to sit down with Love it or List it hosts Jillian Harris and Todd Talbot to see what their favourite design styles are for 2013. Plus, your chance to win a $200 gift certificate to Urban Barn.
1. As you guys settle into your second season of Love It or List It Vancouver what’s been your favourite part of filming the show?
Jillian: I would say the evolution of the design process – I am LOVING the design of our spaces so much more in the second season. I can’t wait for all the new episodes to air! I also have to mention our crew – the behind the scenes crew that you all don’t get to see on TV – is what gets us through the day, every day. We go through a lot of ups and downs with the homeowners and construction, but the crew is always upbeat and trying to make us laugh.
Todd: I love to look at, analyze, learn, and steal ideas from other houses from both an architectural/design perspective and a functional perspective. I get to see a lot of homes all over the city! And I love to talk – it’s really the best of both worlds!
2. And the most challenging part?
Todd: It rhymes with Billian Gerris! With the home owners, managing expectations about what they have in their mind’s eye and what their budget affords in the current market. It’s always an eye opener and sometimes it’s not fun to find that sometimes what you want, you can’t afford. That’s when you have to get creative.
Jillian: One word. Todd. Kidding! i would say budget. I always need more money for these projects.
3. Are you keeping a tally of who’s had to buy more wine?
Jillian: Let’s put it this way. I haven’t brought my wallet to work since 2012. Kidding again! We actually don’t keep tally. We should! Todd what do you think?
Todd: I think I have bought so many times, I’m actually paying to be on the show. Jill, please start ordering the grape juice…
4. What are your favourite design styles for fall/winter 2013?
Todd: The great thing about fall/winter is that everything is more cozy. I love the fact that the focus of the living room becomes about a blazing fire, curling up in layers of blankets and pillows and watching movies. Design, and the home, get more ‘earthy’. Plus, the food! Fall and winter bring on the best cooking – big turkey dinners are my favourite. My dad is famous for going out on Thanksgiving and gathering tons of natural stuff around the woods to bring into the house. There is something very comforting and family-oriented about bringing aspects of nature inside.
Jillian: I love incorporating vintage pieces into modern spaces. I have always been a fan of bringing history and soul into a space with vintage decor, but since I launched my new business Charlie Ford Vintage [www.charlieford.com] it’s become a full-blown obsession!
5. You’re both presenting at the Calgary Home and Design Show, can you give us a little sneak peak about what you’ll be discussing?
Jillian: The age-old question… for love or money?
Todd: We’re going to chat up how our two different approaches work, and how your home becomes something you can love and afford when we meet in the middle. Like Jill said, it’s all about ‘For Love or Money.’ My two favourite topics, oh, and picking on Jill – that’s fun too and I’m sure we will both come out guns a-blazing.
Giveaway: Is there a room in your home that needs a little refresh? We bet a $200 gift certificate to Urban Barn would help! Email us at contest@vitamindaily.com for your chance to win.
