CIFF kicks off in Calgary this week, and while it may not be as
star-studded as its Toronto counterpart the films are just as fabulous.
Our picks for CIFF must-sees:
The Grand Seduction: CIFFs opening gala film is a comedic gem set in
a sleepy Newfoundland town. The locals are looking to bring a lucrative
factory into town but first must lure a doctor in. Hilarity ensues with
Canadian film legend Gordon Pinset and Irish heavy-weight Brenda Gleeson
leading the way. www.calgaryfilm.com/films/2013/grand-seduction
The Right Kind of Wrong: This comedy tells the story of a man who
finally finds the woman of his dreams, on her wedding day. Well feel
right at home watching it as it was shot in Banff and Canmore and it was
co-produced by Calgarys Nomadic Picture. www.calgaryfilm.com/films/2013/right-kind-wrong
The Last Ocean: It took seven years to get the story of the slow
destruction of the Antarcticas Ross Sea, the most pristine biosphere on
Earth, untouched until the harvesting of toothfish began. Director Peter
Young has created as fascinating record of the scientific communitys
effort to save this vital landscape. www.calgaryfilm.com/films/2013/last-ocean
Parkland: This big-name drama (Marica Gay Harden, Zac Efron, Paul
Giamatti) is based around the assassination of JFK in the emergency ward
of Parkland Memorial Hospital, where JFK was rushed after being shot. http://www.calgaryfilm.com/films/2013/parkland
Young & Beautiful: A French film about a teenager who loses her
virginity then chooses the life of prostitution, its a little riskier
than the rest, but it premiered at Cannes to rave reviews. www.calgaryfilm.com/films/2013/young-beautiful
