For every diner there must be a bistro – well, that’s our new philosophy since trying Bistro Wagon Rouge, sister restaurant of popular East Village breakfast spot Red Wagon.
At an early Thursday evening dinner, we scored a table in the bric-à-brac space and perused the menu of classic French fare. The small list of appetizers (like French Onion Soup and Pork and Clams) and mains (like steak frites and cassoulet) already had us debating our options – and that was before we were directed to two boards of daily specials that included oysters, terrines, mackerel, housemade sausage, cheeses and quiche.
The brightest stars in the standout meal included the steak tartare (made fresh behind the bar, a creative way to squeeze the most out of the small space) and topped with an egg yolk as bright as the sun ($10) and tender beef cheek bourguignon ($19), which is sure to become the staple crowd-pleaser.
