OPEN ART

April 16, 2014

bafThe Burrard Arts Foundation (BAF)—an exciting and unusual new art space—opened on 108 East Broadway last weekend.

Christian Chan (of the family that enabled the construction of the Chan Centre) runs the non-profit gallery, which features three cleanly industrial exhibition spaces within one, including a 400-square-foot residency gallery (Joseph Staples exhibition), a 400-square-foot installation gallery (San Francisco-based Eric Otto exhibiting) and a 1,200-square-foot traditional presentation gallery. The inaugural show, on now till the end of June, is entitled "Post REM" and takes a look at the chance occurrences that inspire the work of contemporary artists—like Matt Trahan, who is exhibiting a sculptural grid of delicate, coloured pencil shavings. Through seemingly commonplace, the effect of the work is that of glimpsing into the conceptual starting point of a meticulous, observant mind.
