Wes Anderson’s latest film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, left us utterly charmed, in large part due to its awesome cast—Ralph Fiennes, Jason Schwartzman, Tilda Swinton doddering in elaborate makeup. But the breakout star of the production wasn’t one of Anderson’s talented mainstays; rather, the image that stuck with us after was that of the Courtesan au Chocolate, the famed pastry produced by the film’s fictional Mendl’s Bakery.
The movie’s young heroine lovingly crafts the tiers of pastel-coloured profiteroles filled with chocolate cream. They comprise a significant dessert within the narrative. They even conceal tiny pickaxes smuggled into prison and break a dramatic balcony fall. Elaborate and impish, the pretty pastry made such an impact we couldn’t help but feel disappointed it was fictional. Until now. Vancouver’s own Butter Baked Goods is now offering its take on Mendl’s renowned classic.
With delicate choux and pretty frosting, it’s perfect for the film buff and foodie alike. —Adrienne Matei
