north 53 1You won’t find olive oil or even black pepper on the menu at North 53, one of Edmonton’s newest dining spots and champion of the eat local movement.

That’s because the ambitious minds behind the swank new restaurant have crafted an imaginative menu with 90% of its ingredients sourced from Alberta and B.C. You can choose your own adventure and dine à la carte or, for $85 a pop, take a mouthwatering trip through the tasting menu, which consists of six courses including elaborate takes on elk tartare, duck breast and short ribs. Vegetarians will delight in the Early Tomato ($14)—a dish of baby tomatoes, mozzarella and crunchy shallots drizzled in pumpkin seed oil and ornamented with tempura-like maple leaves. For the thirsty, try a Smoke + Oak ($15) cocktail topped with a slab of charred oak that smokes below the glass.

Cheers, eh. —Janis Galloway
