One hot, summer weekend Toronto sought refuge on the city’s most happening urban beach: Cardboard Beach, designed by Cuban collective Los Carpintero.
The project, part of this year’s Luminato Festival (June 6th to June 15th) can be found at the Hub at David Pecaut Square and provides the perfect setting from which to indulge in some of the city’s best eats, with local chefs using the tropical inspiration to create small plates at $5 apiece. Local and international entertainers will be taking the stage all week, with many concerts free of charge. The daily Slaight Music Series, for one, will shine a light on Canadian talent, including performances by mellow singer-songwriter Nick Sherman and high-energy ska band The Arsenals.
Legendary Canadian songstress Buffy Sainte-Marie will wow the audience on Tuesday, June 10th, while Brazilian Bossa Nova darling Babel Gilberto will serenade the crowd Monday night. Thursday is Sidestepper, blending electronica with Afro-Colombian rhythms with a guarantee to turn the Festival Hub into one giant dance party.
