As Canadian music icons go, Sam Roberts is right up there for me. So, when an invitation to an intimate concert at a Toronto recording studio arrived, I hopped right on a plane (thanks Aeroplan!) and jetted east.
We were there to discuss Aeroplan’s new Distinction program, which is rewards for "Frequent buyers," not just frequent flyers (I made it to their Diamond level for 2014, which says something about me, I guess …). Mr. Roberts was there to play from his new album Lo-Fantasy (the song "Never Enough" was written about Aeroplan miles, he cracked), to drink his new beer (soon to be the only beer on all Aeroplan-partner flights, he jested) and to discuss his dream concert destination, Antarctica (again, courtesy of Aeroplan). Dressed rock-chic in skinny jeans and a Clash T-shirt, he oozed Canadian charm and even helped me plan an upcoming trip to his native Montreal (tip: visit Tokyo, his brother’s bar, and Maison Smith near Beaver Lake with the kids).
So why’s Sam getting into the beer business? To help cut supply costs, he joked, and because last time he checked, "You can’t download a beer." —Sarah Bancroft
