Last week we attended the opening gala party for Vancouver TheatreSports League‘s latest improv show, TripImproviser.
As with most summer nights in Vancouver, we warmed up for the evening with a quick drink on VTSL’s open-air, waterfront Granville Island patio before taking our seats inside, not quite sure what to expect (it’s improv, after all!).
In the end, four performers and a host guided us through the show’s theme: travel and (hilarious) TripAdvisor reviews ("The beach is too sandy!"). With audience participation a must, we heard details about terrible trips, weird landmarks, strange local myths and more. We real-life/real-time LOL’d as the actors—some of whom have been in the biz for 10-plus years, and one (Ken Lawson) who bore a striking resemblance to Jim Carrey—recreated each scene with VTSL’s signature brand of comedy.
Think you had the worst. trip. ever? These guys will turn tears of sadness into tears of joy. —Kate LeGresley
