New Read: Women In Clothes

September 23, 2014

womenWomen in Clothes delves deeply into its subject’s emotionally rich core with 639 conversational essays and surveys from a diverse range of contributors (including Miranda July, Elif Batuman, Lena Dunham, Molly Ringwald and Tavi Gevinson), compiled by editors Sheila Heti, Heidi Julavits, Leanne Shapton, and Mary Mann.

The work gives platform to a diverse scope of perspectives on fashion, style, and why we chose to dress the way we do. Consistently intimate, intelligent and sensitive, the pieces are lushly varied in the experiences and tastes they portray. Where books about fashion often tell, Women in Clothes asks, and compelling questions at that. “What’s the most transformative conversation you’ve ever had about fashion?” “Have you ever stolen dressing ideas or actual items from friends or family?” Through such prompts, historical, emotional and political elements of style are explored, and the reader gets treated to an experience akin to the universe’s best girlie sleepover, where you’re among friends and absorbed in conversation so fun and fascinating you stay up ‘till sunrise.

This Monday, September 29th, Women in Clothes Launches with an event at Cavalier Gastown, featuring a panel discussion with stylish and interesting locals, including FASHION Magazine Western Editor Joy Pecknold and artist and HWY Magazine editor Alex Quicho.
