Acclaimed author David Mitchell came to Vancouver this past weekend to discuss his latest novel, The Bone Clocks, as the kick-off special early event of the Vancouver Writers Festival, which officially begins October 21st.
The author spoke of developing his now-signature style (fantasy meta-physics swirled with heartbreakingly identifiable characters set in realist dystopias, see previous work: Cloud Atlas), giving the audience tips on everything from how to construct a fictional language to the best music to play while writing. Hearing a talented writer speak about their passion is inspiring, and Vancouver Writers Fest facilitates the experience by hosting a distinguished array of authors, from tendentious Norwegian literary sensation Karl Ove Knausgaard to Canada’s eminent Emma Donoghue (author of many works, including the jarring 2010 account of abduction, Room). We’re looking forward to seeing Miriam Toews and Thomas King in conversation at their sure to sell-out event (both their new novels, All my Puny Sorrows and The Back of the Turtle respectively debuted to dazzling accolades, making it a hot-ticket).
