3 Terrifying Things to do on Halloween

October 29, 2014

It’s still about the candy. But you’ve got to do something else, too. With tons going on (that you can still get into), we present our picks for how to spend your Halloween in Vancouver.

2shimmy: Get your thrills with the Lost Girls burlesque at Fox Cabaret (prepare to have your sexy costume upstaged). After the show, a Darker Side of Indie DJ set featuring Patrick Campbell and Trevor Risk starts spinning Joy Division and The Cure—may we suggest a generous application of black eyeliner? Fox Cabaret, 2321 Main St., Vancouver, www.foxcabaret.com

shake: The Cobalt hosts its third annual Halloween tribute party, with Blondie, The Clash, Aerosmith and The Sex Pistols taking the stage in wild feats of approximation. A howlingly good opportunity to make your night really about music and all those dance moves your costume emboldens you to bust out. The Cobalt, 917 Main St., Vancouver, 604-685-2825, www.thecobalt.ca

screen: If you’re vehemently head-shaking at the idea of other people’s sweaty drunkness and synthetic wigs then forgo the mega-rowdy club scene and catch an atmospheric flick. Cinematheque offers a horror triple bill (Nosferatu, The Wicker Man, Eraserhead—all great for surrealism and sexual undercurrents) while VIFF runs Princess Kaguya, a good alternative to really freaky films, being more darkly resonant than anything. But the Rio plays our fave: Beetlejuice. Say it with us twice more. Rio Theatre, 1660 E. Broadway, Vancouver, 604-879-3456, http://riotheatre.ca

skullbonus: Keyed up and ready for another party post Halloween? November 1st, El Kartel, Mezcaleria and Tribe Collaberative present a Dia de Muertos celebration at El K’s Chinatown location. Admission is free and you can get a little sugar-skull makeup applied between tequila shots. El Kartel, 1007 Granville St., Vancouver, 604-683-2171, http://elkartel.com

When you’re done, destroy a respectable pile of mini-Twix and shoot some Roman Candles. —Adrienne Matei
