Our New Spanish Crush: Barsa Taberna

October 31, 2014

barsa tabernaA sip of cava sangria in the cosy, cavey space that Barsa Taberna calls home was enough to transport us to a cool tapas joint in Barcelona—though not all the menu items at this cool new resto are traditionally Spanish.

Executive chef Michael G. Smith has taken inspiration from his travels around the world—and from having lived in numerous TO neighbourhoods—to create a menu that features dishes like Pok Pok prawns with pineapple glaze and green papaya and grilled octopus with channa masala, tamarind water and papadum. But it’s all served in a Spanish way. Patrons, says Smith, are meant to “sit, and eat and talk about food—this is not a place where you eat a chicken breast and then go home!”

We’ll take modern tapas over plain ol’ chicken any day. — Karen Kwan
