Step off South Granville and into Initial Gallery to see local artist Rebecca Chaperon’s Eccentric Gardens show, on till November 15th.
The collection of acrylic works summons a deliciously disconcerting world. Long-fingered girls are depicted in a surreal natural landscape, emerging from caves or cooking hand-caught fish while paranormal elements loom. Premonitory black rhombus portals apparate in candy-necklace skies above placid bubblegum lakes. The powerful forms represent, to Chaperon, artistic inspiration, with the gardens themselves an ode to an internal creative space. One motif is rendered in sculpture, a wiggly pastel rainbow swirling from the gallery wall as fluid as a thought.
The exhibit is effectively evokes a creative oasis; you can hear singing-bowl hums and taste candy floss the whole way through. —Adrienne Matei
