Time to update your technology—these three new local apps will simplify your life.
takes two to tangoo: If you’ve ever wanted to capture a very specific vibe on a night out and found yourself racking your brain for perfect spot, Tangoo presents choose-your-own adventure options for every occasion (date night, hanging with friends, impressing the client), then allows you to customize your ideal atmosphere with buzzwords (say, "celebrate" and "patio," or "hidden gem" "with a view"). Boom—a list of locales that fit the bill. It’s like a concierge, in your pocket. Free here.
shomi how you do that trick: New Canadian video-streaming service Shomi (a Rogers-Shaw co-production) is about to give Netflix Canada a run for its money. With a far more elegant interface, the user experience outperforms NetFlix and "collections" curated by industry veterans (the person who picks the films at your film festival) lend more personality. But—dealbreaker—will there be better content? We were pretty happy catching up with Louis C.K. on our recent demo. $8.99/month at www.shomi.com
windy warning: Learning to read can be a cumbersome process for a five-year-old, so anything we can find to entertain our little learners in an educational (and non-cartoony ) way is a blessing. The new locally developed Windy’s Lost Kite app, based on a book series by Vancouver authors, captivated our tester … so much so that her kindergarten art projects began to resemble the colours and esthetic of the stop-motion story. Watch for Sunny to be launched next. $3.99 at the App Store. —Sarah Bancroft & Adrienne Matei
