When you find yourself composing an ode to a grecian meal as you’re eating it, you know it’s a good one.
From the start of our meal (salty, gooey saganaki) to our main (the delectably smoky grilled octopus) and the finish (a brûléed yogurt with berries)—all washed down with an excellent ginger beer and whisky cocktail—we felt like waxing poetic about the flavours we were enjoying at Mamakas Taverna. Not once did we wonder, “Why don’t you have souvlaki on the menu?” And the cheerful, bright space—with 85 seats filled with all types of patrons, from grandparents to gal pals ready for a girls’ night out—is comfy and refreshingly unpretentious.
Maybe writing another ode is in order—any excuse to get us back to the Greek. —Karen Kwan
