Last night we celebrated Sam Sullivan’s 20th Public Salon; a fascinating and informative local speaker series that brings together some of the city’s warmest and most engaged characters for brief talks on their field of expertise. Every iteration features guests from widely different realms (art, science, entrepreneurship) but are linked by a common thread of passion and community-orientation. Last night’s event featured sitar-player Mohamed Assani recounting his musical journey and choreographer Martha Carter describing the way she feels dance articulates the nuances of modern life.
Those with an interest in jewellery and the sources it’s obtained from should check our Hume Atelier, whose Genevieve Ennis Hume spoke, for both their beautiful pieces and support of improvements to artisanal mining conditions. If you’re interested in learning more about how to get engaged in environmentalism at home, the culture and sustainability oriented Hua Foundation is a good place to start (and was poignantly discussed by founder Claudia Li).
Ultimately, each speaker at Public Salon allows for a deeper look into aspects of the city with which attendees may not be familiar, sparking interest to learn. Want to know what cool things are swirling around you right now?
The next Global Civic Public Salon is February 18, 2015.
