Sister restaurant to a Montreal dining institution—Dominion Square Tavern, which sits happily next door—Balsam Inn is a modern English restaurant that’s more ab fab than fish ‘n’ chips.
We ventured in for dinner on a chilly Tuesday evening and were seated to the sounds of Frank Sinatra mixed with The XX. The menu instantly made our mouths water, thanks to a choice of beer tartar, fried chicken, lamb meatballs and savoury pockets of ravioli filled with the sweet tang of butternut squash. As our chanterelle and wild mushroom flatbread reached the table, we couldn’t help but notice the variety of diners peppering the space—no doubt a result of Balsam’s perfect balance of affordable and delicious tapas-style dishes.
Whether you’re in the mood for a drink or the most spectacular sampling of fried chicken you’ll have the pleasure of ordering, the new Balsam Inn is your best bet. —Ariella Starkman
