The Perfect Mini-Trip: Brackendale

January 22, 2015

eagle2The difficultly of organizing a serene getaway can negate the experience’s anticipated effect. You need someplace that seamlessly pulls of the paradox of being easy to get to but pleasantly isolated. Ideally, nix ferries and airplanes. Add verdancy, rusticity and a sense of adventure. Sunwolf Cabins & Floats in Brackendale measures up.

cabinSunwolf’s 5-acre property is dotted with historic logger’s cabins (from $100 a night) carefully restored by the resort’s young, British ex-pat proprietors, Jake and Jess (their giggly toddler provided cheerleading). Each cabin is unique, charming, and retains the feel of its former self, so you can build a wood fire, sleep on a bed beneath a peaked attic roof and note framed vintage newspaper pages discovered within the walls during renovation and repurposed as décor. A lack of wifi is also notable, and nice.

The salmon-chocked Cheakamus provides a rare, world-class opportunity to see eagles, and Sunwolf’s key activity is taking guests on languorous floats downriver ($100 per adult) to spot upwards of fifty bald eagles in an hour (a perfect off-day activity for Whistler skiiers looking for a unique B.C. experience). In warm weather, white-water rafting is an exciting draw.

fergiesSunwolf also boasts Fergie’s Café, reliably known as the best diner in Brackendale, which makes house-smoked bacon and sausage for its killer breakfasts (they draw in folks from as far as Seattle, but locals have been known to trot in on horseback for freshly-laid eggs and dream-haunting brownies so soft and fudgy they should be illegal). Summer sees special long-table dinners served under the green canopy of a massive light-strung walnut tree—an element of the resort’s quickly developing reputation as a perfect wedding locale (big fire pits and unlimited guest camping on the property help, too).

Need to get away from it all, and fast? Consider Brackendale your go-to nature escape. —Adrienne Matei
