Planning to serve a special meal for your Valentine? Skip the steamed lobster and go for what you know they’ll love: cheesy nachos and an ice-cold beer.
the chew: Rhonda Zuk has been making artisan pecorino cheeses (with help from her herd of 150 East Friesen ewes, and she recently ventured into cow’s-milk products, too) in Kitscoty, two hours east of Edmonton, since 2010. Now her company, The Cheesiry, is offering a 50 Shades of Grey Valentine’s Day basket, which includes four kinds of cheese, Hershey’s Kisses, pull-apart Twizzlers, sheep jerky, local honey and crackers, starting from $60. Order by phone, or find them at Zuk’s shop in Kitscoty or the Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market. The Cheesiry, Range Rd. 24, Kitscoty, 780-522-8784, thecheesiry.com
the brew: Two Edmonton craft breweries, Alley Kat Brewing Co. and Yellowhead Brewing, will refill your growler (a giant, 1.89-litre bottle for draft beer) with their delicious brews. Our recommendations: Alley Kat’s Aprikat’s apricot wheat ale or smooth, hoppy Full Moon IPA, or Yellowhead’s simple, delicious Yellowhead Lager.
Fire up Netflix and you’re set for the most romantic night of the year. —Miranda Post
