Whether you choose to take a beautiful, four-hour drive or a short plane ride to Kamloops, your arrival at Sun Peaks Resort will generously reward you with frosted mountains and a charming, gingerbread village so relaxed and casual, it takes on a whole new meaning of “chill.”
stay: Sleeping at the base of the mountain at Sun Peaks Grand Hotel allows you to maximize your stay, quite literally, with lobby-to-lift skiing. It also offers beautiful luxury amenities for amazing après-ski activities. Sun Peaks Grand Hotel, 3240 Village Way, Sun Peaks, 844-774-7263, www.sunpeaksgrand.com
sport: Pick your sport! Between enormous amounts of ski-able terrain, snowshoeing adventures complete with cookies and hot cider, backcountry snowmobiling, slick skate skiing and even dog sledding (petting the puppies after your ride is super satisfying), Sun Peaks offers a variety of outdoor winter fun that can be tailored to suit your skills and abilities. www.sunpeaksresort.com
savour: Skiing sure works up an appetite (or, perhaps, a great excuse) for sinfully delicious blueberry scones and espresso at Bolacco Cafe. If you’re in the mood for tourtière with a side of scandalous Canadian history your social studies teacher wouldn’t dare share, dine at Voyageur Bistro, where owner Kevin Tessier is often found sharing his passion for food and the fur trade. Voyageur Bistro, 3270 Village Way, Sun Peaks, 250-578-5268, voyageurbistro.ca
sip: With a burgeoning wine culture in Kamloops, Sundance Fine Wine, Beer & Liquor stocks a superb selection of B.C. bottles, including selections from new-to-the-scene Misconduct Wine Co. and old vets such as Poplar Grove Winery. Sun Peaks also hosts an indoor-outdoor wine festival each January, allowing the entire community and a swath of out-of-town guests to celebrate (and sip) best-of-B.C. bevvies. Sundance Liquor, located in the Residences at Sun Peaks Grand, 250-578-0420, www.sundanceliquor.ca
spring and summer: If winter’s not your game, warmer weather holds fun tricks at Sun Peaks, too. The mountain resort’s bike park is known for challenging trails … or so this “not so daring devil” has heard! For us tamer types, there’s hiking, golf and even new wineries, like Harper’s trail, to visit. In fact, we hear that the area’s wine trails may soon compete with its bike trails, with the Kamloops Winemakers’ Association working to create exciting new wine excursions and tours. members.shaw.ca/kamloopswinemakers
