With a collective love for delicious food and exquisite wine, we joined a group of fine-dining enthusiasts at The Wild Fig Restaurant at the Executive Plaza Hotel in Coquitlam last Friday for a genius five-course menu by award-winning chef Boban Kovachevich meticulously paired with stunning wines chosen by master winemaker Dave Carson of See Ya Later Ranch.
The evening opened with a fruity Gewurztraminer (our favourite), curried chicken breast (to die for) and the fascinating tale behind See Ya Later. Turns out, the Okanagan Valley winery was purchased in 1919 by one Major Hugh Fraser, who fell in love with the region. Unfortunately, his bride did not feel the same. She soon walked out on her husband, leaving behind a note that read, simply, “See Ya Later.” From that moment, Fraser dedicated his life to his winery.
Turning back to dinner, we transitioned to a rich Pinot Gris paired with a prawn avocado potato mille-feuille tower almost too beautiful to eat (we did it anyway, and loved it). Next up, Fraser Valley duck and a bright Pinot Noir, then lamb leg with Ping-Meritage, which offered dark flavours of plum and cherries. Dessert saw a lovely cheese platter complemented by a light and fragrant Riesling.
Outstanding food and wine by world-class craftsmen (not to mention, the hospitality of the Executive Plaza Hotel team) made it an evening to remember—we can’t wait till the next event. —Vitamin Daily
