Restaurant Etiquette

May 19, 2015

etiquetteWhen people think of restaurant etiquette, they think about which fork to use and not putting their elbows on the table.  But what about all the other niceties that go into making a great dining experience for everyone? Here are a few pointers:

> The person who made the reservation should be offered first choice of seats at the table, particularly if it was a hard reservation to get. This rule also applies if you go to dinner with someone who has never been before. This is particularly true if the person is from out of town and may not get to that restaurant again.

> Should one of the dinner guests take over ordering without consulting the other guests on price, it is presumed that person will pay. If you want to avoid being stuck with the bill, show the other guests the cost of the wine, for example, and inquire if everyone is comfortable with that price point.

> When being treated to dinner, of course order something you want, but exercise moderation. If your appetizer is quite expensive, then order a less expensive entree.

Observe these simple rules, and we’ll all leave dinner feeling we were treated well! —Randall MacDonald
