10 Things We Love About Juniper Restaurant

December 4, 2015

Opening December 5th, here’s why we think Juniper will be Chinatown’s new hot spot.

1.   The Gin & Tonic menu, with over 30 gins and seven artisanal tonics, helmed by acclaimed beverage director Shaun Layton (formerly of L’Abattoir).

2.   The Rad-Ish gin and tonic with thinly sliced watermelon radishes and pink peppercorn—savoury yet festive.

3.   Chef Sarah Stewart’s Squash Perogy with Nutmeg Cream. Decadent enough to share, but try to eat just one.

4.   The upper level mural by Ola Volo. Subtle and original. www.olavolo.com

5.   Simcic & Uhrich Architects’ use of black metal, blond wood, concrete and brass, for a very contemporary yet inviting look. Check out the entry modeled on an inverted skateboard ramp.

6.   Downhome dishes that are comforting yet elegantly executed, like Cornish Hen with Quince Mustard, or Braised Bison with Juniper Jus.

7.   Artist Ricky Alvarez’s wood installation in the upper dining room, made with wood foraged on the Sunshine Coast. www.tintocreative.com

8.   Hands-on owner Lilian Steenbock (mother of five) and her husband Luis, who migrated from Mexico City for a long-time love of Vancouver.

9.   The architect-designed brass tubular ceiling lamp that snakes its way around the restaurant.

10. The stocked book shelves, inviting you to stay a while. And you will. —Sarah Bancroft
