Our hearts go out to those displaced by the horrific fires, but for those wanting to send more than just good vibes we’ve rounded up a few ways to provide support:
Give money: Donating to the Canadian Red Cross is one of the best ways to directly help the relief efforts. Bonus: the Canadian government is matching all individual donations. Donate online or by texting REDCROSS to 30333 to make a $5 donation.
Share your home: If you have an extra room in your house, a vacant rental property or are heading out of town for a few days list your house on Airbnb for free for Fort McMurray evacuees—the site is waving all fees for the majority of the month.
Donate goods: The food banks in both Calgary and Edmonton are accepting food donations. You can also check out Facebook pages like Fort Mac Fire Donations to see what items are needed—check before donating goods to various centres around Calgary and Edmonton, as many are not equipped to accept huge quantities of goods.
Volunteer: Visit fortmac.recovers.org to be matched with volunteer opportunities in areas across Edmonton, Calgary and southern Alberta—many of the distribution centres need help organizing donations. The Edmonton Emergency Relief Service also needs volunteers for various duties; visit their Facebook page for more information.
Eat + drink: Bars and restaurants across the province are holding fundraisers or donating portions of their sales to the relief efforts. The Atlantic Trap & Gill pub is doing a fundraiser at both the Calgary and Edmonton locations on May 19 complete with live music, a silent auction and door prizes. And Cactus Club locations in Edmonton and Calgary are donating all funds from the sale of the Feenie Burger through the weekend to the Red Cross.
