VanCity’s New Art Spot: Gallery 1515

July 12, 2016

Gallery 1515 boldly carves out a new space for the visual arts in Vancouver. Founder and curator, Sarvenaz Amanat transformed the foyer of the sleek and modern Amanat Architect building into an exquisite little exhibition space and officially opened it to the public in February 2016. Creativity, innovation and design run in the Amanat family: her father Hossein Amanat is a world renowned architect and designed the structure that houses both the architectural firm, and now too, Gallery 1515. Amanat’s exhibitions, rotating every few months, aims to showcase local, Canadian and international artists and the gallery’s inaugural exhibition featured a display of her own work.

Currently on display in the exhibition titled Transcendence is the mixed media work of Montreal-based artist Floyd Sinclair. Sinclair’s raw sculptures and fantastical paintings urge viewers to transcend the limitations of visual judgement so that we can look beyond skin colours and seek out the inner complexities that define our character. —Laura Busby
