In a province with relatively young roots in the wine industry, second-generation estates are a rare and wonderful thing. The Mavety family planted the vines that would become Blue Mountain Vineyard and Cellars in 1971, championing noble varietals like Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay (the same varietals found in the Champagne, Burgundy and Alsace regions of France) with their 31-hectares of land.
The winery has since become best known for its Methode Traditionnelle sparkling wines and Pinot Noir, and its “Estate Bottled” philosophy—which means 100 per cent of the grapes used are grown on the stunning Okanagan Falls estate.
It wasn’t a straight shot to having their own label, though. For 21 years the Mavetys supplied premium grapes to commercial wineries. But, in 1991, the draw of producing their own quality wines won out, and Blue Mountain was born. Which means the family operation, now run by brother and sister duo Matt and Christie Mavety, is celebrating 25 incredible years this September!
The winery will be ringing in its silver anniversaire with its annual five-course Harvest Dinner, taking place amongst the painterly backdrop of Blue Mountain in the fall (Sept. 3 and 4), just as the harvest is reaching its peak. This year’s dinner is fully sold out, however booking is now open for Harvest 2017, and that’s one party where you won’t have to bring your own bottle of wine! —Vitamin Daily
