For 2016, Collins Dictionary said that the UK’s word of the year was Brexit, but the runner-up was the distinctly lovelier and cuddlier hygge (pronounced hoo-guh). It’s a Danish/Norwegian expression without exact translation, but that essentially means a state of being cosy, comfortable and safe.
