Warm Up at Whistler’s Audain Art Museum

December 20, 2016

By now Whistler Village is beautifully blanketed in snow … And if you’re like us you’re planning to spend at least a couple of days on the hill for a ski (or on the couch enjoying a fireside hot toddy) this holiday season. Either way, we suggest adding to your list of Whistler activities a trip to the Audain Art Museum, conveniently located in the heart of the village.

In addition to the extraordinary permanent collection which includes Emily Carr paintings and the world’s only carved Dance Screen by Haida master carver and artist, Jim Hart, on now till Feb. 6 is an immersive film-based exhibition entitled Intersections: Contemporary Artist Films. The exhibition features work by Canadian artists Matilda Aslizadeh, Patrick Bernatchez, Stan Douglas, Pascal Grandmaison, Marie-Claire Blais, Lisa Jackson, Fiona Tan, and Althea Thalberger.

We are especially impressed by Vancouver-based artist Aslizadeh’s three-channel video installation titled Resort (2016), which is projected onto a panoramic screen. The work is inspired by a trip the artist made to a resort where she began to mull over the odd realities and histories of such manicured fictional “paradises” followed by an encounter with a monument to Captain James Cook. Resort, set on an isolated tourist resort, took four years to conceptualize and is comprised of repurposed images found on the internet and staged actions.

A little arts and culture along with our hot toddies and skiing should round out our trip just fine … —Laura Busby

Intersections: Contemporary Artist Films is available Oct. 29 to Feb. 6, 2017. Admission: $18.
