With the indulgent holiday season behind us, bartender Brad Stanton of Prohibition in Vancouver’s opulent Rosewood Hotel Georgia is sharing the recipe for his Turmeric Fizz—a unique cocktail full of antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents and other healing properties that toasts 2017 without breaking our New Year’s resolutions.
But, before we get to the recipe, we asked Brad a few questions about the drink and, importantly, his own healthy resolutions for the year:
What was your inspiration/reason for creating this cocktail?
I recently discovered the incredible health benefits of turmeric and wanted to incorporate the food into a cocktail and share its health benefits with our guests. I also knew that the bright gold colour would be visually stunning.
Why is it awesome to be able "drink" our superfoods?
Turmeric is a remarkable health food. It contains a high level of antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agents. I found that tequila proved the best match, with some dry vermouth helping to add depth of flavour and vegetal tones. Charging the mixture with CO2 really helps make the drink feel refreshing and invigorating on the palate. When you combine black pepper with turmeric, it raises the bioavailability of the many health-improving properties and, of course as we know from Indian and Asian cuisine, it’s delicious!
What’s your personal top healthy resolution for 2017?
To begin every day with some stretching. I leave my yoga mat out before I go to bed and that way I have to walk past it in the morning. I try to devote at least 20 minutes to yoga/stretching before I do anything else in the morning and, so far in 2017, I’ve only missed one day!
