Here’s What Mother Nature Wears to Work

February 26, 2017

It’s hard to find great clothes for work. Like, really hard. Clothes that are office-appropriate and the right fit, colour and style for your body aren’t that easy to come by. And if you’re like us, the task is made even more challenging due to the fact that you really want clothes that aren’t just made of polyester, acrylic or nylon. Rather, you want high-quality clothes that look sharp and feel great, and it would be ideal if they could also be made of a natural fibre, rather than something petroleum-based. Right? Right.

You probably would also like to be sure your clothes didn’t come from a sweatshop or employ child labour. Plus, it would be really nice to know that they were manufactured without causing terrible damage to the environment. Oh, and you probably really don’t want to be caught wearing the exact same thing as someone else in your office, because you all shop at the same mall. That’s never good. And maybe, on top of it all, you’re also sensitive to wool. So, no sheep for you, unfortunately.

With a list of preferences like that, give or take, it’s been hard to find great clothes for work … until now. Enter Wallis Evera, a.k.a. the fashion unicorn, a.k.a., our latest, greatest style find, a.k.a., eco-conscious clothing Mother Nature herself would be proud to wear to work.

Here’s the long and short of it: Wallis Evera is a Canadian brand that creates elegant, enduring garments—think sleek dresses, stylish pencil skirts, figure-flattering tops and fitted (but never stiff) jackets—using natural, durable, high-quality hemp fabrics as an alternative to less-earth-friendly cotton. Founded by self-proclaimed "conscious consumer" Monique Parker in Vancouver (where every piece is designed, cut and sewn), the brand’s beautiful offerings are paired with an equally beautiful philosophy: that clothing should be cherished, rather than considered disposable, and that what we wear can spark the kind of dialogue that’s necessary to change attitudes and consumption patterns toward a more sustainable future.

As for the style part of the equation—that is something these clothes have in spades, particularly when it comes to pieces meant to be worn on a daily basis, to the office, to an after-work function and on weekends, too. Among our personal favourites: the classy-yet-sassy Emma Jacket ($279), the Dagny Dress (in the black/smoke combo, please, $229) and the playful Lou V-neck Top ($69), which kinda makes us feel like a super-heroine.

Like Mother Nature, we’d be proud to wear this stuff, too. —Noa Nichol
