Eco Fashion Week is back for another round of fabulous eco-friendly fashion showcases, speakers, showrooms and, of course, the Chic Sheets competition.
Eight top fashion design students from the LaSalle College Vancouver Yaletown and Renfrew campuses are already hard at work preparing for the Fairmont Waterfront Chic Sheets Bed Linen Challenge. They are tasked with creating unique high-fashion looks using only recycled sheets from the Fairmont Waterfront and Tintex fabric dyes. In honour of Canada’s 150th birthday, the theme for this year’s challenge is: What does Canada mean to you?
We recently had a chance to check out the designs and, despite the three-week time constraint and minimal supplies, each student’s dress concept looks absolutely unique and very high-end. One student’s design includes Victorian-style sleeves—a homage to the birth of Canada—and a fish scale-like pattern reminiscent of the famed salmon of the West Coast. Another fantastically extravagant dress design features almost prism-like volume on a two-tiered skirt achieved via interfacing and careful pleating, in a beautiful gradient of red, yellow and pink.
The contestants have the chance to win either the jury vote or the People’s Choice award for sought-after prizes presented by OKEO-TEX and the Fairmont Waterfront, respectively. The student designs will be showcased at the Fairmont Waterfront on March 31 and will be on display for the entire year.
