Here are a few things we’re coveting for Mother’s Day (aside from love, hugs and breakfast in bed, of course). Take notes, people (read: hubbies and kiddies). —Marianne Wisenthal
bring on the bubbles. There’s no grief you can bring us that can’t be sweetened with a glass of bubbly. Fruity and full-bodied, Italian Ruffino Prosecco pairs perfectly with soft-ripened brie and whining. From $17 at liquor stores across Canada.
matching socks. Fun new socks always put a spring in mom’s step. Last year L.A.-based Pair of Thieves launched dad + kid pairings that, quite frankly, made us a tad jealous. Finally moms can get in on the twinsie game with one of four peppy print duos from floral to polka dot (18 months to 12 years). $20 at pairofthieves.com
mama kit. For mums who say, "Don’t buy me anything," how about a donation to Plan International Canada? Mama Kits ensure mothers-to-be in developing countries like Nigeria get everything they need for a safe birth. Kits include much-needed hygiene items and warm swaddling wraps. $35 at plancanada.ca
scent of a woman. Created by Montreal fragrance designer Ruby Brown, Simons new Eau Contemporaine comes in three lovely scents: soie, coton and lin that complement the store’s in-house Contemporaine clothing line. Each bottle is modern, sophisticated, stylish—just like Mom herself, right? $50 at simons.ca
monogrammed leather. Put mom’s initial on pretty much anything and she’ll give you a cookie. Made in Canada, Brave Leather’s handmade veggie-tanned Giovana totes will hold all her stuff (and yours, too, if we’re being honest). $240 at braveleather.com
the perfect card. We’ll never object to being spoiled, but little gestures are darn fine, too. Made in Toronto, The September Project cards have simple, black-and-white messages that tell it like it is. They’re packaged in biodegradable cellophane and, until May 14, $1 from each card sold on Etsy will go to the Women and Babies Program at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital. $7.15 at etsy.com
page turners. Between wiping noses and car rides to karate, there isn’t a whole lotta time for reading, or baths. Now Kobo’s brand-new Aura H20 eReader lets us do both at the SAME TIME (cue the angels singing). This waterproof beauty holds up to 6,000 books and has an anti-glare, paper-like display that won’t strain eyes. It’s not available until May 22, but we’ll take an IOU. $200 at kobobooks.com
