If you’re anything like us, you’ve spent the last 24 hours swooning (borderline sobbing—just us?) over the Gucci Resort 2018 show. The gold! The sparkle! The prints! This is the most Alessandro (yep, we’ve made him an adjective) collection we’ve seen to date. Socks with sandals, sneakers with suits and men in tights. Our main takeaway? There are no rules! This is the Gucci seal of approval to have fun with fashion. You do you boo!
But, while we’d love to rock the head-to-toe eclectic esthetic every day (we’re talking about you, Look 7), what are the key trends we see making their way from the catwalk to our daily wardrobes? Here, we round up our top predictions. —Tori Macnab
put a sock in it. Yes, we’re still rejoicing about being able to expose our white pins to the long-awaited sunshine but, if today’s weather is anything to go by, we’d better get ready to cover up. There was barely an ankle sight at the show. Even gowns were worn with socks and sandles, while skirts were paired with GG embossed stockings in creams, lilacs and oranges. For a glamorous more-subtle take on the trend, we love these Swarovski-pearl-adorned tights. But, for the more rebellious among you, why not try pairing these gorgeous wildrose ankle socks with your suits and stilettos?
you’re so clashy. Anything goes—and, just like Gucci, we mean that literally. Don’t be afraid to mix textures and prints. The key here is attitude. Wear it with confidence and show ’em you mean it. Feel like dipping your stocking-socked toe into the trend but not sure where to begin? Our advice is to start with texture. Why not pair a silk pleated skirt with a chunky knit? Once you’ve got that down you’re ready to move into pattern clashing. Floral prints were particularly prominent in this show. We’re heading to Zara for its gorgeous selection of swoon-worthy options. Pick your favourite, then choose two or three colours from your pattern and ensure you use the same hues in every other piece. If in doubt, floral and leopard print are always a match made in (Gucci) heaven. Trust.
get ahead; get a headscarf. There are few things we love more than a trend that also doubles as an excuse for Day 4 hair. Enter the headscarf. If yesterday’s show proved one thing, it’s that almost any outfit can be improved with some sort of head adornment. A gold-leaf crown with a suit, a turban with a gown or a bandana with your knits. We love this Pharaoh Egypt print silk scarf from FreyWille ($520), which can be worn as a neck tie on your good hair days. Winning.
specs appeal. Sticking with the "more is more" theme, we saw many of the models sporting statement eyewear. From jewelled frames to grandpa-style specs to heavy black oversized lenses, there was a look for everyone. We love this hexagonal rose pair ($245) from Bailey Nelson.
go for gold (and lamé and sparkle!). Sparkle and shine like the fashionista you are! Gucci’s models were embellished from head to toe in accents of gold—hair wreaths, mules and star-spangled cuffs. And, it looks like the ’80s vibe is here to stay (hello Look 108 in your silver suit!). We’ll be recreating this look with this metallic top ($18) and skirt ($50) combo from H&M. Throw on your glasses, your headscarf and your ankle socks and you’ll have yourself a gold-winning #ootd. Alessandro, eat your heart out!
