1. Remove every single item from your closet and lay it on your bed.
2. Vacuum and wipe every shelf clean.
3. Step back and take a critical look at your closet space: have you utilized all the closet area (high and low)? Would you benefit from installing an extra shelf or buying some shoe racks? Have a pen, paper and measuring tape on hand for notes. The idea is to optimize your closet space to its full storage potential.
4. Buy any closet-organization items you need as well as inexpensive but matching hangers (plastic/velvet/wood). Big-box stores like Real Canadian Superstore or Costco are great resources for this.
5. Separate your clothes into piles on your bed or on your floor as you examine every single clothing item (be critical). Questions to ask: do you like this piece? Does this piece flatter you? Is it the right size? Does it need to be drycleaned? Are any repairs needed? When was the last time you wore it?
6. Start placing items back in your closet piece by piece as you ask yourself the questions above. If there is any doubt, do not hang it back into your closet (put it aside for further consideration).
7. As you re-hang/fold your clothes, organize them by colour: whites, creams, pinks, reds, greens, greys, browns, blues, blacks. Do not distinguish between their function if you are hanging your clothes—you can hang tank-tops next to T-shirts, dress shirts, sweaters, pants and jeans. If you are folding some of your clothes, these are better organized by type (T-shirts in one pile, jeans in another pile). Generally, if you have the space, clothes breathe better when hung, they stay less wrinkly and they are easier to see.
8. Use the same approach for your shoes. Be critical and only keep the shoes you wear, are still in good condition and are comfortable.
