A first-of-its-kind limited-edition (and limited-location) collection of uniquely Canadian housewares will be available at the IKEA Etobicoke location starting June 8 (and only while supplies last).
Called ÅTERSTÄLLA, which means to restore, heal or redecorate, the grouping of handmade items is the result of a collaboration between IKEA Canada and the female-founded Setsuné Indigenous Fashion Incubator—an organization that fosters the artistic creation and exhibition of new works by local indigenous artists working in fashion, textiles and crafts. It also marks the first time the Swedish brand has partnered with social entrepreneurs on a collection in Canada (reason to love No. 1).
On offer are an apron, a small bag, a basket and a tea towel, all made entirely out of salvaged IKEA textiles that would otherwise have gone to waste (reason No. 2). Each item is carefully crafted by a real-life artisan, meaning no two pieces are exactly alike (reason No. 3).
We love the pretty patterned tea towel ($4), the perfect-for-storing-loose-tea pouch ($3), the multi-purpose apron ($13, featuring a common-to-indigenous-dress three strips of ribbon design) and the fabric basket ($4), taking our total tally of reasons to love this launch to seven, rather than three. —Noa Nichol
