Ever been to Toronto? Ever eaten at Fresh? Ever wonder why the West Coast didn’t have an equivalent delectable hip (not hippie) plant-based eatery? Well, wonder no more—welcome to Vancouver, Kokomo!
Opened in the heart of Chinatown by former Lululemon-er (so you know her health game is on point) Katie Ruddell, you can’t miss this cheerful open-concept all-vegan café fronted by a rolling garage-style door (left wide open in warm weather, natch) and outfitted in navy blues, bright oranges and lush greens (the latter courtesy of actual living foliage—potted palm, banana, fig and cocoa plants, to be exact). Take a seat at the communal and, fittingly, butternut squash-shaped table, and eagerly await your order of "sun-inspired" good-for-you food. Choose, for instance, an anchovie-free hemp Caesar bowl (trust this vegetarian: the dressing tastes just like the real deal) or the customer-fave coastal macro bowl (with finger-licking-good made-locally small-batch tempeh). Be sure to leave room for dessert: a trip to Australia triggered a partnership between Ruddell and Cocowhip and, now, hers is the only Canadian resto to serve the coconut water-based soft serve-like treat (which boasts added probiotics and superfoods, to boot).
Open for breakfast and lunch (and takeout), there’s talk of a delivery service and, possibly, dinner items in the near future. Here’s hoping those plans come to fruition soon. —Noa Nichol
