Some things you just don’t mess with: Sunday morning sleep-ins (even our two-year-old knows not to press her luck before 10 a.m.), non-stop reality TV on long-haul flights (we feel a full refund is due if the monitor on the back of the seat in front of us is out of order) and, of course, chocolate. So, when we heard that confectioner free2b was bringing its allergen-free chocolate treats to Canada, we were wary. With claims of being peanut, tree nut, gluten, soy, egg, dairy, sesame, corn, coconut, mustard, fish and shellfish free (and certified kosher, non-GMO project verified and Rainforest Alliance certified to boot), our first thought was: that’s great for the 2.5 million Canadians who self-report having at least one food allergy, but does it taste good?
That, it turns out, was a very silly question. Dairy-and-everything-else-free chocolate is actually beyond tasty. We practically inhaled a bag of free2b’s Blueberry Crunch Snack Breaks (rice-crispy, berry-bursty, silky smooth chocolatey morsels; $7.99-$9.99 at Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix locations nationwide) and look forward to doing the same to the dark chocolate with roasted sunflower seeds and dried cranberries, and dark chocolate with organic crushed peppermint candies varieties. This allergen-free range even includes Sun Cups—that’s right, candy cups minus those pesky peanuts that are banned from schools and so many other public places these days ($3.99-$4.99 at Goodness Me locations throughout Ontario)! Best of all, you can use these babies to create delicious free-of-Canada’s-top-allergens snacks at home (check out two free2b recipes here).
We know we said don’t mess with it but, in the end, we think allergen-free chocolate may be even better than the real thing. —Noa Nichol
