IDS Vancouver is returning for its 13th year as the Pacific platform for all things design. This needs-no-intro (but we’ll make one anyway) annual tradeshow highlights the biggest innovations in design trends, talents and products from Vancouver, the Pacific Northwest and across the globe, and this year’s show is no exception. Here are the top design trends you’ll see at the show this year.
geometrics. The Woman in Paris dressing table and the Metropolis dining table from the Vanilla Noir collection, which is designed by IDS Vancouver keynote speaker Matteo Cibic, emphasizes the current trend of geometric shapes and patterns in design. Marrying teakwood with metal and resin inlay creates a perfectly modern piece for living and office spaces.
raw white. With hand-crafted goods in high demand, Raw White offers unearthed, beautiful imperfection. Texture gives these pieces more depth, like these gorgeous handmade porcelain ceramics by Hitomi Mckenzie. The transparent shiny glaze and natural porcelain colour makes these ideal accessories for a modern living space.
smart furniture. With new technologies integrating into our daily living more and more, it’s only natural to see this trend claim a stake in furniture and décor. Retrobound’s inbound coffee table, with lights that will change to almost any colour, allows users to alter the mood in the room, effectively creating a functional work of art. Bonus feature includes the cushy upholstery inside the coffee table, perfect for resting tired feet.
greens. With green being the colour of the year, it’s being incorporated in both obvious and subtle ways. A more minimal approach is represented in the Accent Bench from SHIPWAY Living Design, which pairs natural wood with a pop of green colour for a contemporary look without going overboard. Designed with the modern condo in mind, the bench is ideal for narrow hallways, or can be used at the dining table to seat two. Extra points for the brand’s strong commitment to the environment, using wood from a sustainably managed community forest on Cortes Island.
graphic prints. Bold patterns have made their comeback and are being featured in textiles, fabrics and wallpapers to help add accents to the home. Hygge & West has a collection that will add a personalized, bold statement to any room. They will be featuring their collaboration with design expert and blogger, Kate Arends (of Wit and Delight), on the IDS Vancouver show floor.
