When fighting cancer, hair loss from chemotherapy can be another blow in already devastating circumstances. For the past 10 years, the Canadian Cancer Society and Pantene have teamed up for Beautiful Lengths, a campaign that encourages us to donate our locks for real-hair wigs. This Saturday, November 18, marks National Donate Your Hair Day and we asked Carly Schur, director of corporate programs at the CCS, to share a little more about about this incredible initiative. —Rachel Johnston
Tell us about the campaign. How does it work?
The Canadian Cancer Society partners with Pantene through the Beautiful Lengths campaign to encourage people to donate their hair so that real-hair wigs can be made for cancer patients. The wigs are distributed to CCS wig banks in our community offices across the country. People can visit cancer.ca to learn more about our wig banks across Canada.
Why is it so important for people to have access to real-hair wigs when battling cancer?
When a person has cancer it can feel like their body is out of control. Our colleagues who fit people with wigs explain that when a patient tries on a wig for the first time they feel like they have gained some control back. These patients are so thankful.
Is there anything else we can do to contribute?
In addition to donating hair, you can help by making a monetary donation at Donate2Create.ca so even more wigs can be created for this amazing cause.
