Bravery With Purpose

November 23, 2017

If you walked by Boys’Co on Robson in Vancouver this week, you may have noticed Braeden Ralla in the window. Oh, and did we mention he was in his underwear? The Purpose Smoothie Co. founder graciously donated his time (and physique) to raise awareness for men’s health through the Bravery Takes Balls campaign, a partnership between SAXX and the Movember Foundation. Below, Braeden explains more. —Rachel Johnston

Hi Braeden! What motivated you to become involved in Bravery Takes Balls?

I was honoured by the opportunity to raise awareness for men’s health. I believe happiness and health are the two most important things in life, and we sometimes take those things for granted. If you are healthy enough to exercise, then you need to exercise that right!

How does the campaign work and what can we do to contribute?

The campaign involves me, and other guys in Toronto, New York and Chicago, standing in the window of SAXX retail partners in just a pair of SAXX. The goal is to raise awareness and funds for men’s health—for every pair of SAXX’s special moustache-printed collection sold, $2 will be donated to the Movember Foundation.

Why do you think men tend to avoid talking about and dealing with health-related issues?

I think sometimes we see being sick or injured as a weakness, so we’d rather not talk about it. That’s actually the worst thing to do though, as that can destroy someone inside. I think it’s extremely important to talk to close friends or family when an issue occurs, because those people care and are there to help.

Were you nervous about standing in a store window in just your underwear?! Have you ever done anything like this before?

I have never done anything like this before. I tried to convince myself I was OK, then I was driving to Boy’sCo for my first day thinking to myself, "What in the world did I sign up for?" When I got to the store I was so nervous, but the SAXX team was awesome in supporting me and reminding me WHY I signed up for this. A strong why goes a long way.

What advice would you give to men facing a personal health challenge?

First, even though you may be going through a dark time, you have to take a minute to count your blessings. Whatever the issue may be, there are tons of people out there that have it worse. The second thing would be to attack the issue with a positive mindset. You have to truly believe that things will get better and that there will be light at the end of the tunnel. Last but not least, surround yourself with positive people who care about your well-being. They can help bring your spirits up and also help you celebrate the small victories on the road to recovery.
