I’ve spoken about it before (here) and the truth is downsizing (even when it’s a happy transition back to the city from the ‘burbs) takes work. Luckily I had, in my personal journey from 3,000 to 1,500 square feet this past summer, a lot of help from Kijiji.
The obvious assistance I got from Canada’s number 1 local classifieds website was in the selling department. Forced to eliminate many still-useful items that were filling the 15 rooms of my old house (to compare, my new townhome has a grand total of seven rooms), Kijiji allowed me to easily create ads around the things I wished to sell/give away—ads including informative titles, detailed descriptions, photos, pricing and conditions of the sale. While not all of my stuff went (sometimes beauty really is in the eye of the beholder), I was delighted by how many things we managed to purge via the site (the extra cash didn’t hurt, either).
Swapping was a surprise benefit of downsizing with Kijiji. While parting with my full-size wine fridge was sad, I traded it for a cute condo-sized cooler (and enjoyed ensuring every bottle that didn’t make the cut was put to good use). In fact, I purchased several space-saving items, including a barely used compact sectional couch and a like-new dining table with removable leaves, online. And another major boon: downsizing via the second-hand economy meant I lessened my carbon footprint in a big way, with minimal trips to the dump and the good feeling of knowing I was really "walking the walk" in the reduce, reuse, recycle realm.
Honestly, without Kijiji, I don’t think my downsizing experience would have been so successful—or enjoyable. Gratitude! —Noa Nichol
