5 Top Tips to Up Your Instagram Game (Win a Google Pixel 2 From TELUS!)

November 29, 2017

For Amir Golbazi, there is nothing as evocative as an unspoiled landscape. His Instagram page is a treat for anyone who is awed by the raw beauty of nature, from the savage Skogafos waterfall in Iceland to a misty lake at daybreak in northern Ontario.

“I like to feel the power of nature and how ruthless it is,” says Golbazi of his artistic vision.

As a photographer, capturing these moments is a reminder of how big and grand the world is, and his place within it.

That philosophy folds neatly into Golbazi’s advice to anyone who is looking to boost his or her own photographic skills on Instagram. Here are his top five tips:

be yourself. “No one wants to see a copy of someone else’s work,” says Golbazi. He’s built his own fanbase by staying true to his passion for grand landscapes, all subtly infused with warm tones and a matte finish that evokes a moody feeling of untamed wilderness. It’s one of the key reasons he loves the new Google Pixel 2. The phone’s camera has dynamic range of capturing shadows and highlights within an image. It’s a perfect complement to his own style preference.

more image, fewer words. Golbazi is a big fan of keeping his Instagram captions short and sweet. If you are doing it right, your photo will capture the emotion you want to convey. Any writing you add should act in compliment to the image, including where it was taken, the time and date. “A landscape tells a 1,000 words that took millions of years for nature to write,” he says.

keep it vertical. From a technical standpoint, Golbazi advises to keep photographs posted on Instagram in a vertical format. “That commands the most real-estate space on the Instagram app,” he says.

put it in perspective. Effectively capturing the majesty of a mountain peak, rocky beach or lakeshore is impossible without a focal point to draw the eye in and allow viewers to appreciate the scale of the subject. Golbazi will sometimes position a person or object, such as a canoe or building, in the photo as a means to put the vastness of the landscape into perspective.

smartphones are a smart choice. “I always say that the best camera is the one that you have on you, and it is much easier to carry a smartphone than a big camera and lens,” he says. Currently, the Google Pixel 2 is considered the best mobile device camera on the market, with a record-setting overall DxO score (five points over the original Pixel). Along with its dynamic range, the camera is praised for its strong preservation of detail, dynamic range and excellent colour rendering, making it a great camera to capture high-contrast scenes, whether cityscape or landscape.
