More exercise, more vegetables … how about getting more zzzs in 2018? With Statistics Canada reporting that, despite the fact that seven to nine hours of sleep a night are recommended for optimum physical and mental health, at least one-third of Canadians are not meeting this, we’re making the length and quality of our sleep a top priority this year. And, thanks to LunaZen—a Vancouver company that handcrafts gorgeous mattresses using premium Canadian materials like Zen-M Memory Foam, Ecotex Soy Foam and pocket coils and ships them, full length, anywhere in the Lower Mainland or Vancouver Island within 10 days, with a 100-day sleep-satisfaction guarantee—it looks like at least one of our New Year’s Resolutions will be met! Tell us a bit about yourself, LunaZen, and what spurred you to start this company?
After seven years working in the family’s furniture business, I saw the increased demand for beds. It was from there that I decided to branch out and specialize in the perfect mattress with the goal of delivering the very highest in quality at an affordable price.
What’s the difference between a traditional and a hand-crafted LunaZen mattress?
The main difference is the technology. Several traditional innerspring mattresses use a steel coil support system, meaning the springs are connected in a single unit and are all attached to each other—an inexpensive way to make a mattress. Other mattresses are all foam based, and have no edge support. A LunaZen mattress has been reduced down to three essential layers: Zen-M memory foam, EcoTex soy foam and a bi-level pocket coil system, of which each pocket coil is individually wrapped. LunaZen also comes with a Silpure cover, using the power of silver to bring long-lasting antibacterial properties. Silpure promises the mattress lasting cleanliness and freshness, and protects against microbial growth. You can read more about Silpure here.
How can a mattress optimize our sleep?
When a mattress provides the right amount of support and stays at a cool temperature, it can improve your quality of sleep. Your mattress should be solid and supportive rather than fluffy and soft. LunaZen mattresses quickly respond to individual body weight and conform to your personal shape. They also reduce your sleep surface temperature to keep you feeling both cool and refreshed throughout the night.
What are your top tips for improving one’s sleep environment?
stick to a regular sleep schedule—no matter what. Sorry; this means no staying up late, sleeping in on the weekends, or naps. If you want to improve your sleep quality, you need to set a bedtime and stick to it. Your body craves set schedules and routines—especially when it comes to sleep. Once you make it through a few nights, your body will start feeling tired at the “right” time and you won’t crave an afternoon nap.
set a power-down time to prepare your brain for sleep. Your brain is chronically overstimulated. Set a quiet time routine to help your brain power-down. Put your phone down at least an hour before bed and spend some time reading, taking a bath, practising yoga or doing something relaxing.
create ideal sleeping conditions. Go into your bedroom and take a look around. Is there any light seeping in? Are there sounds? What’s the temperature? Your bedroom should be a cool 16 to 19 C without any light or noise. Blueish lights from phones, bulbs or electronics are even worse. White noise machines are OK for masking other sounds.
keep up with physical activities. Vigorous exercise is important for promoting healthy brain chemistry and regulating sleep. However, any exercise is better than none. Try to avoid working out directly before bed. Instead, find a time that works best for you.
invest in a quality mattress and pillow. Mattresses only last about nine or 10 years. It’s important to replace your mattress before it wears out and accumulates too many allergens. Your mattress should supply support: find something solid and supportive rather than fluffy and soft.
Personal question: early bird or night owl?
