With a new year and new nutritional resolutions in full swing, we thought we’d settle, once and for all, “the great salt debate”. Julie, please help us understand! What’s the deal with salt? Is it good for us, or bad for us?

I think the reason salt has been so demonized is it’s become a highly refined substance. For a long time we really only had exposure to that white refined table salt that’s not nearly as healthy as unrefined salt, which contains the trace minerals needed to balance out the sodium. The other problem with refined salt is it has a lot of additives and preservatives, so we do find the refined sodium chloride is problematic for human health. Happily, when we look at unrefined sea salt, like that which you find in Herbamare, it’s actually very health promoting.

So, what’s the (healthy) difference between refined table salt and the sea salt found, along with fresh herbs and vegetables, in Herbamare?

The beauty of using unrefined salt—like the sea salt found in Herbamare, which comes from the salt works in southern France and is neither bleached nor refined—is it has 65 trace minerals, including magnesium, calcium, iron, zinc and iodine, and that’s incredibly beneficial. Herbamare also includes a host of other healthy ingredients, like thyme, marjoram, rosemary, kelp, celery, leek, cress, onion, chives, parsley—a whole garden of vegetables and profoundly anti-inflammatory herbs! Not to mention, they taste amazing! How nice it is that we can reduce the amount of sodium we’re sprinkling on our food by spiking our meals with a tremendous amount of flavour?

As a nutritionist, what’s your favourite way to use Herbamare?

I use Herbamare in so many aspects of cooking and food prep, but I really love it in broth! I’m on a special cleanse called the Hot Detox, which is from my book, and I like starting my day with a “soupie”—a soup smoothie! The idea is, instead of having a standard high-sugar breakfast, you make a savoury bone-broth soup using lots of Herbamare and lemon juice, something creamy like hemp hearts and tons of veggies like spinach or cooked broccoli, all puréed into a very nice soup. Adding Herbamare to that is a must, as it really carries that broth and creates amazing flavour. And that, I think, is my favourite thing about Herbamare—you’re getting all that intense nutrition in a truly delicious package!

Julie Daniluk is a leading nutritionist with three bestselling books, a popular online detox program and thriving Facebook community.
