Pitchers aside, the perfect Super Bowl drink could just be one of these cocktails, developed by one of Canada’s best bartenders, Zak Doy of Wizards of the West. Honouring past half-time-show and national anthem performers like Justin Timberlake and Pink, they’re perfect for those of us who are secretly (or overtly) more excited about the entertainment than the football game! —Noa Nichol
Wardrobe Malfunction
Fourteen years after Nipplegate, JT returns to the stage with a bang! For fans of the Filthy singer, Zak’s created a Caesar that strays from the norm and hits you on several notes, just like Justin.
1 oz radish- and dill-infused gin (recipe below)
4 dashes jalapeño hot sauce
4 dashes Worcestershire sauce
4 grinds fresh-cracked salt and black pepper
4 oz Mott’s Clamato Pickled Bean
Radish rose and sprig of fresh dill for garnish
Rim glass with pepper and crushed dill. Add all ingredients to a highball glass filled with ice. Stir, garnish with radish rose and dill and serve. To make infused gin, seal five to six thinly sliced radishes and two sprigs of fresh dill for every two cups of gin (like Death’s Door) in an airtight container. Leave for three to four days, shaking every day. Strain and serve!
No Apologies
Philly native Pink will be rooting for the Eagles—fitting since she’s renowned for soaring like one during her aerial performances. To capture the layers of spice in Pink’s sassy personality, Zak created this Caesar that is guaranteed to turn up the heat.
4 dashes of the hottest hot sauce
3 grinds fresh-cracked salt and black pepper
1/2 jalapeño (keep seeds for added heat)
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 green onion
1 oz tequila (like Herradura)
4 oz Mott’s Clamato Extra Spicy
Spicy prawn and red hot chili pepper for garnish
In a mixing glass, muddle everything except the tequila and Mott’s Clamato; once muddled, add those two ingredients and stir. Pour into a highball glass rimmed with salt and pepper and garnish with a spicy prawn hot off the grill.
Canada the Beautiful
Leslie Odom Jr., the Tony Award-winning star of Hamilton, singing America the Beautiful, had Zak yearning for a distinctly Canadian—and arguably more beautiful—Canadian Caesar.
1 oz Canadian whisky (like Stalk & Barrel)
1 tsp maple-flavoured barbecue sauce
3 dashes Worcestershire sauce
3 dashes hot sauce
3 grinds fresh-cracked salt and black pepper
4 oz Mott’s Clamato Original
Maple bacon for garnish
Rim glass with Montreal steak spice, fill with ice and add all ingredients in the order listed. Stir well, wrap a piece of maple bacon on a skewer and serve.
