We’re a bit late to the game when it comes to Vancouver’s Milano Coffee snagging two (more, cause they already had a whole bunch) gold medals for their Silk Lili and Concept #9 espresso blends at the prestigious International Coffee Tasting Awards held in Guangzhou, China, back in December 2017. But hey, better late than never—especially when it comes to our daily cuppa.
We met up with Milano owners Brian and Linda Turko just after their win was announced, and discovered that award-winning coffee really does stem from the passion of the people behind it. Brian is the first to admit that, when he broke into the business years ago, he knew little about the craft, but was open and eager to learn from experienced mentors. Fifteen years and five locations (including the original and our neighbourhood favourite, Turk’s) later, he and wife Linda have perfected the art of coffee making and, in fact, were responsible for starting the trend of offering more than one espresso bean blend (their cafés now offer up to eight different espressos at any given time).
So, do heed our advice and head to the closest Milano location (they’re in Vancouver, Toronto and Comox, on Vancouver Island, plus you can buy beans online) for a taste of the two latest award-winners. We may be tardy reporting on this, but it’s not too late to try for yourself! —Noa Nichol
