If you’ve got hockey-playing kids (or any puck-loving family member, for that matter), you know how stinky their post-game gear can get. We recently chatted with hockey mom extraordinaire, Kelly McDavid, whose son, Connor McDavid, is an NHL all star. Kelly shared with us her top care tips for hockey equipment (hint: Febreze Fabric Refresher is her all star, in this sense) and told us what her—and Connor’s—favourite Febreze scent is (hint: it’s seasonally appropriatre)! —Noa Nichol
Hi Kelly! Tell us a bit about yourself and what having hockey-playing kids has meant to you as a mom over the years, in terms of caring for their sometimes-stinky gear?
It has certainly been smelly, but it has been very rewarding as well! I’m a mom to two very successful boys who both played hockey growing up (and a husband who coached) so I had to deal with a lot of bad hockey smells. I always kept a bottle of Febreze Fabric Refresher in my house, my car, and even my bag, just to be able to stand the stink!
In your experience, what are some of the most-challenging cleaning issues around smelly sports gear, and your top "insider" tips for overcoming these?
In my experience, the most challenging part of the hockey equipment—or at least the smelliest part—are the gloves. It’s important to air those out! As for an insider tip: when you’re travelling with your kids and their hockey gear (and staying in one room), always bring a bottle of Febreze Fabric Refresher. The hotel room just isn’t livable otherwise!
As some Canadians get ready to store away their hockey equipment until next winter, can you offer some advice on how to do so optimally using products like Febreze?
The absolutely best thing you can do is air out your equipment thoroughly. What we always did, especially on a nice and sunny spring day, was to air out the equipment outside for a little while to ensure it was completely dry. Then, before putting the equipment back into the bag, give the gear—and the inside of the bag, too—a good spray of Febreze Fabric Refresher to make sure it smells fresh before storing everything away until next winter.
This may be a tough one, but do you have a personal favourite Febreze scent? How about Connor?
Happy Spring is both of our favourites. It makes the equipment smell even fresher!
