Quinoa is a superfood whose recent rise to nutritional fame has at times been shrouded in controversy. If you know anything about the grain, you’ve likely heard that, often, quinoa-growing regions in South America suffer as a result of producing quinoa, facing decreased soil fertility as farmers mine their soil year after year to meet western demand, not to mention poor employment standards for farm workers. Additionally, the rising demand for quinoa worldwide has created conditions where natives in countries like Bolivia and Peru can no longer afford to eat.
What you may not have known is that quinoa is able to grow in Canada—in fact we’ve been growing it in our beautiful country for more than 20 years! To that end, a Vancouver-based company called Grain has committed itself to connecting consumers directly with products that are sourced from Canadian farms, operating with the philosophy that, in the same way consumers are increasingly looking for transparency when it comes to where their meat, fish and dairy are coming from, people should also know where their grains are coming from, too. And, to do its part, healthy meal-delivery service Fresh Prep has decided to feature Grain’s Canadian-grown golden quinoa in several of its recipes this summer—including Chimichurri Pork Chop with Mint Pea Quinoa Pilaf—in order to support Canadian farmers and local businesses.
